Treating children needs particular attention. Talking to the child properly at the first meeting, easing their fears and building trust matters well beyond that appointment — it shapes how they will feel about dental care as adults.

The first visit

The first appointment is best kept short and simple: getting to know the child, looking in the mouth, and letting them see the room without anything being done to them. A child who leaves calm comes back willingly.

Why baby teeth matter

Baby teeth hold the space for the permanent teeth that follow and are needed for chewing and for speech. A baby tooth lost too early can let neighbouring teeth drift and crowd the tooth that was meant to come through.

Preventive treatment

Fissure sealants close the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of back teeth, where decay usually starts. Fluoride applications strengthen enamel. Both are quick, painless and far easier for a child than a filling.

What parents can do

Brushing twice a day with a parent's help until the child can do it thoroughly alone; keeping sugary drinks to mealtimes rather than through the day; and check-ups before there is a complaint, so the first visit is not a painful one.

Treatment is planned after an examination, taking the child's age and the state of the teeth into account.
